I am going to examine the different types of love Essay Example
I am going to examine the different types of love Essay In this essay I am going to examine the different types of love and analyse the language that Shakespeare uses to describe them.Shakespeare shows Courtly Love through Romeos love for Rosaline (act 1 scene 1 lines 167-172, 208-215) and Paris love for Juliet (act 5 scene 3 lines 12-17).Courtly Love was a European tradition dating from the Middle Ages. It was a set of rules and expectations about the way lovers from the aristocratic classes should behave. The man should fall in love with a lady of a higher social class. She would probably be married, and therefore unobtainable. He can neither eat nor sleep thinking of his lady. These are a few rules of courtly love.Romeos love for Rosaline was strong, even though that Romeo had never seen Rosaline. The audience find out later that Romeo is in love with the idea of being in love, I know this because:This love feel I, that feel no love in this meaning he was in love with the conventions of love rather than actual love. The courtly love is wri tten like a poem to make the reader realise this is not real love, I know this has when Romeo speaks the words are written as a poem. Shakespeare uses personification in act 1 scene 1 line 169 where love is in capital and it is referred to as Cupid and not as a feeling.Alas that Love, whose view is still muffledOxymoron (a combination of contrasting words), loving hate, heavy lightness these are here to once again show the falseness of Romeos love for Rosaline. Rosaline is also a Capulet and Romeo is treading dangerously.Theres much to do with hate, but more with love meaning some to hating the Capulets but more to do with loving Rosaline. Romeos speech is hyperbolic (exaggerated) to show Romeos view of his love for Rosaline.Negotiations between Paris and Juliets arranged marriage did not surprise the audience, as this was the age when girls got married. The negotiations did not go well, as Juliet refused and Lord Capulet said that if she didnt get married she would be banished.Pari s love for Juliet is also strong and wants Juliet because he thinks she is dead (act 5 scene 3 lines 12-17).Or, wanting that, with tears distilled by moans meaning if he doesnt get Juliet he will cry and moan. This seems that he had very strong feelings for Juliet.Shakespeare shows Family Love between the Capulets household in act 3 scene 5 lines 137-203.Lord Capulet is very angry towards Juliet for not agreeing to marry Paris. There are words of conflict,My fingers itch showing he wants to hit Juliet.Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch! Showing feelings of violence. The Capulets wanted Juliet to get married to Paris as this was the age of getting married and that Paris was a good catch as he was wealthy and a high status. Husbands were chosen by wealth, riches rather than love. Women had no say in his. Earlier in the play Lord Capulet shows love to his daughter Juliet (act 1 scene 2 lines 25).Earth-treading stars that make dark heaven light meaning ladies (Juliet) bright as stars, yet walking on earth. Lord Capulet then treats Juliet, as he doesnt know her by insulting her for not agreeing to marry Paris.Lady Capulet is with Lord Capulet in this argument rather than trying to side with Juliet. The nurse on the other hand is very angry at Lord Capulet for arguing with Juliet and blames him.You are to blame, my lord, to rate her so. The nurse shows much love for Juliet as she has cared for Juliet more than Lady Capulet.Juliet goes to consult Friar Laurence to hear his plan to try and solve her problem. Juliet goes to Friar Laurence as she sees him as a father figure (act 4 scene 1 lines 126).Farewell, dear father! Juliet sees him as a priest but on this occasion hes more like a father to her.Shakespeare expresses Sexual Love through Sampson and Gregory (act 1 scene 1) and Mercutio and Benvolio (act 2 scene 1 lines 17-40).Sampson and Gregory make puns (act 1 scene 1 line 32) and rude jokes (act 1 scene 1 lines 22-25).I will cut off their heads the heads of the maids, or their maidenheads, meaning take womens virginity (a rude joke). My naked weapon is out, meaning his sword but this also means a mens genitals is out (a rude pun). In the start of the argument between Sampson and Gregory they both say collier, choler and collar (these three words all sound alike).Mercutio and Benvolio make jokes and puns about Romeos love (act 2 scene 1 lines 17-40).If love be blind, love cannot hit the mark meaning if theres no love then love cannot achieve its aim. Shakespeare uses such language and includes such scenes to show that sexual love is natural. When Romeo and Juliet meet and kiss each other for the first time, Shakespeare has written the words in a form of a sonnet (a fourteen line poem with the last word rhyming). The sonnet contains an argument and a way working through that argument. The sonnet also includes such religious words as Pilgrim, Profane, Shrine, Saint, Holy, etc (act 1 scene 5). These words are to show Romeo and Juliets lov e as a religion. This holy shrine meaning Juliets hand (act 1 scene 5 line 93). When Romeo spoke about Rosaline he used a lot of oxymorons loving hate, bright smoke to indicate the falseness of his love for Rosaline. In the balcony scene (act 2 scene 2) Romeo has climbed over the wall into the Capulets orchard to speak to his love Juliet (who is on her balcony of her bedroom hence the name the balcony scene). Romeo and Juliet refer to each other as words such as the sun, the moon and the stars (act 2 scene 2 lines 3, 4, and 15).Two of the fairest stars in all heaven referring to Romeo and Juliet. And Juliet is the sun! referring to Juliet. Romeo then swears his love for Juliet by the moon, but Juliet disagrees because the moon is inconstant and she wants their love to last long. Juliet then gives Romeo the idea of getting married.I have no joy of this contract to-night. Romeo promises to see her the next day.

How to Write a Sample Essay - A Guide
How to Write a Sample Essay - A GuideSo you've decided to write a sample essay for the SAT test taking. Don't despair, because writing a well-written essay can be easy. The following are some tips on how to write a good essay.A Thesaurus: The best way to begin writing a sample essay is by using a thesaurus. If you don't have one yet, go get one before you begin. You will need to gather all of the words that you want to use and write them down in order. For example, if you are writing a piece about those living in poverty, then the first words that you should consider using are 'opportunity'poverty'.Using A Keyword: The next step is to find the best keywords that you can use to describe your topic. One good place to start is with the meaning of the word, for example 'opportunity'poverty'. Write as many ideas as you can with these words in mind. Try to think about ways that you can combine the words to give new meaning to the words.Beginning a Sentence With a Connecting Sentence: The n ext thing that you need to do is put an idea between two sentences. The next part of the essay should be about the connection between the two sentences. You can do this by putting a 'through' between the two sentences.Using 'Positive' in a Sentence: The final tip for writing a good essay is to avoid the words ' that', 'that', and 'he/she/it' from writing your essay. Instead, stick to 'who', 'what', and 'how'.Your main goal when writing an essay is to 'show, not tell'. Your goal should be to communicate with your readers by being engaging, clear, and concise. If you are able to do this, then you will be better off for it.Now that you have written a sample essay, it's time to put together the essay. The best place to start is by breaking the essay up into two sections. You should do this so that you can group the essay into paragraphs. This will make it easier for you to read the whole piece, and you'll also have a way to organize it.Now that you have created a paper that you can show off to your friends and your parents, it's time to add more than a couple of words. If you are applying for college, then this would be a good time to add three more pages to your paper. It's always a good idea to apply the tips in this article to any essay that you write.

Esperenza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
Esperenza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan Free Online Research Papers On her parentsââ¬â¢ vineyard in Mexico, Esperanza lives the life of a princess surrounded by the love of her family and servants. But on the eve of her thirteenth birthday, this dream is shattered when bandits kill her father and her dishonest uncles threaten to take everything. Faced with impossible choices Esperanza and her mother flee, and must begin a new, harder life far from home. The Authors Style Pam Munoz Ryanââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ë Esperanza Risingââ¬â¢ is one of the best books I have ever read. It shows conflicts of the early 1930ââ¬â¢s in Mexico when many Mexicans were out of work and moved to the Californian states to find work. Many moved onto Company Camp Farms. These are large farms that pick crop all year round and supply housing that is only small one-bedroom cabins without proper furnishing. The book is based on Pamââ¬â¢s Abuelita grandmother, Esperanza Ortega Munoz Hernandez Elgart, who lived a life like the Esperanza in the book (her as a young child.) She suffered many of the pains that the Author wrote about and inspired people to have ââ¬Ëesperanzaââ¬â¢, The Spanish word for Hope. The Book is written in third person. The main characterââ¬â¢s thoughts and emotions tell you a bit more about conflicts and hard times they are going through or witnessing. This helps the reader to understand the emotional changes evident in the character throughout the book. It Caught my Attention! Ramona,â⬠said the Lawyer, ââ¬Å" Your husband Sixto Ortega left this house and all of its contents to you and your daughter. You will also receive the yearly income for the grapes. As you know, it is not customary to leave land to women and since Luis was the banker on the loan, Sixto left the land to him.â⬠ââ¬Å"Which makes thing rather awkward,â⬠said Tio Luis. ââ¬Å" I am the Bank President and would like to live accordingly. Now that I own this beautiful land, I would like to purchase the house from you for this amount. ââ¬Å" He handed Mama a piece of paper. Mama looked at it and said, ââ¬Å" This is our home. My husband meant for us to live here. And the houseâ⬠¦ it is worth twice as much! So no, I will not sell. Besides where would we live?â⬠ââ¬Å"I predicted you would say no Ramona,â⬠said Tio Luis. ââ¬Å"And I have a solution to your living arrangements. A proposal actually. One of marriage.â⬠Page 30-31 This part of the story made me feel very anxious and wanting to see how things would turn out. It made me wonder how I might feel if I was in Esperanzaââ¬â¢s or even Mamaââ¬â¢s position and what I might do to fix the problem. If Mama did end up marrying Tio Luis, I tried to imagine what Esperanza would feel like and how she would react. My Reflection The situation I chose to reflect on was when Mama is sent to hospital with valley fever where she had to stay for nearly 6 months. It made me feel as if I was longing to get Mama back. It made me wonder how people in the real world feel when their mums and dads are taken away. It gave me some insight on how upsetting it could be. The Character That Surprised Me! The character that surprised me most throughout the book was Miguel. Although at times Esperenza was rude to him, he still acted very respectfully towards her. One way that he showed this was acting as if he was still lower than her when he was not and by calling her ââ¬ËMi Reinaââ¬â¢ my queen. Although Miguel and Esperenza are equal, they are still on different sides of the river that never could be crossed. Several years ago, when Esperenza was still a young girl, Mama and Papa had been discussing ââ¬Å"Good Familiesâ⬠whom Esperenza should meet some day. She couldnââ¬â¢t imagine being matched with someone she had never met. So she announced ââ¬Å"I want to marry Miguel!â⬠Mama had laughed at her and said, ââ¬Å"You will feel differently as you get older.â⬠ââ¬Å"No I wonââ¬â¢t,â⬠Esperenza had said stubbornly. But now that she was a young woman, she understood that Miguel was the Housekeepers son and she was the ranch ownerââ¬â¢s daughter and between them ran a deep river that could never be crossed. In a moment of self-importance, Esperenza told all of this to Miguel. Since then they had only spoken a few words to her. When their paths crossed, He nodded and just said politely,â⬠Mi Reina, my queen,â⬠but nothing more. There was no teasing or laughing like there used to be, Esperenza pretended not to care though she secretly wished she had never told Miguel about the river.ââ¬â¢ Pg 17-18. A Taste of the Book Esperanza looked up to see Miguel, holding a broom and a dustpan. But he wasnââ¬â¢t laughing. She looked down and bit her lip so she wouldnââ¬â¢t cry in front of him. He shut the door, then stood in front of her and said, ââ¬Å"How would you know how to sweep a floor? The only thing that you ever learned was how to give orders. That is not your fault. Anza, look at me.â⬠She looked up. ââ¬Å"Pay attention,â⬠he said, his face serious. ââ¬Å"You hold the broom like this. One hand here and the other here.â⬠Esperanza watched. Then you push like this. Or pull it towards you like this. Here, you try,â⬠he said, holding out the broom. Slowly, Esperanza got up and took the broom from him. He positioned her hands on the handle. ââ¬Ë Page 118 Research Papers on Esperenza Rising by Pam Munoz RyanThe Effects of Illegal ImmigrationBook Review on The Autobiography of Malcolm XTrailblazing by Eric Anderson19 Century Society: A Deeply Divided EraHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows EssayPersonal Experience with Teen PregnancyEffects of Television Violence on ChildrenHonest Iagos Truth through DeceptionHip-Hop is ArtComparison: Letter from Birmingham and Crito

Fortune Magazine Says LinkedIn is Rocking!
Fortune Magazine Says LinkedIn is Rocking! On July 15, in an interview by Margaret Larkin on WCKG Chicagoââ¬â¢s Geoff Pinkus Show, I was asked what main mistakes people are making on LinkedIn. My response was that the biggest mistake people make is not being on LinkedIn in the first place ââ¬â or not taking it seriously if they are. This sentiment was echoed in a July 2013 Fortune Magazine article entitled, ââ¬Å"LinkedIn: How Itââ¬â¢s Changing Business (And How to Make it Work for You).â⬠Journalist Jessi Hempel asserts, ââ¬Å"In the past year LinkedIn has emerged as one of the most powerful business tools on the planet.â⬠She reports that according to ComScore, the number of users who log on at least once a month has jumped 37% over last year, to 141 million worldwide. Furthermore, 88 of the Fortune 100 use LinkedInââ¬â¢s licensed recruiting software to search for job candidates; the software obviates the need to pay a headhunter. As a job seeker or business person, why would you not want to jump on the LinkedIn bandwagon with full enthusiasm? LinkedIn is largely conceived as a job seeking hot spot. It might be telling that students represent LinkedInââ¬â¢s fastest-growing member group, ostensibly because they are cognizant that it is essential to have a positive presence on LinkedIn when entering the job market. What students and other professionals might not realize, as described in the article, is that LinkedIn is not just a tool for job seekers. Large corporations such as Citigroup, NetSuite and Dell are using the power of this business network to target markets, conduct surveys, and conduct creative marketing activities. Also not obvious to most of us is that LinkedIn is working on collecting information that will likely provide some of the most accurate and valuable information about the job market and business throughout the world. CEO Jeff Weiner envisions that ââ¬Å"LinkedIn will provide a real-time measure of where jobs exist, where customers arenââ¬â¢t being served, and where people need training.â⬠One use of the site, for example, would be to identify what colleges are best for obtaining certain jobs after college. After all, LinkedIn has accurate information on where all its members went to college and what types of jobs theyââ¬â¢re in now. Watch out U.S. News World Report ââ¬â LinkedIn is coming! People are paying attention to LinkedIn. The author of the Fortune article related that she updated her LinkedIn profile as part of writing the story; and her colleagues noticed. They jumped to the conclusion that maybe she was thinking of looking for a new job- a common perception when someone updates a profile. But the reality is that updating a profile is a good idea for everyone, not just job seekers. It is a way to ââ¬Å"touchâ⬠your network and gain visibility. Maybe youââ¬â¢ll get a lunch meeting out of it, or an interesting information exchange. Perhaps the most interesting point of this article to me personally is that LinkedIn has a vested interest in having its members improve their profiles; if the site is to become competitive in the sales industry, it must provide companies with robust information on social networks. It is odd, therefore, that LinkedInââ¬â¢s platform is confusing to many, and also, as Ms. Hempel points out, that LinkedIn has not commissioned any ââ¬Å"How toâ⬠books about using its site. How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile is cited as one of the premier books on the subject, a mention which makes me proud. Hempel observes that LinkedIn has been extremely persistent in its vision, making it ââ¬Å"the single biggest repository of career dataâ⬠and positioning the site to be a force in how business is done worldwide. This observation brings me back to my radio interview and my point that the biggest mistake you can make on LinkedIn is not to be on the site or not to take it seriously. How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile Iââ¬â¢m doing everything I can to support LinkedIn members in creating effective profiles (and to keep up with the rapid changes LinkedIn is making to its functionality). Sex and Marriage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Sex and Marriage - Essay Example The essay "Sex and Marriage" demonstrates that the evidence from a significant subculture, the swingers, shows that the consensual physical infidelity, especially mutual, need not threaten the stability of marriage as long as respect, consideration, trust, and love remain. The popular notion is that if one engages in nonmonogamous sex outside the bounds of marriage one is being unfaithful to their partner. The assumption is that this is being done secretly without the consent or even knowledge of the partner. Hence, we have the term ââ¬Å"cheating.â⬠Under these circumstances, I would agree that it is an act of infidelity. I partly agree with the mainstream in the following respect. The person is being unfaithful not because of the nonmonogamous sex act per se, but because it is done secretly due to anticipated partner disapproval. Applying this definition of infidelity, any act, whether sexual or not, pursued secretly due to partner expected disapproval would be an unfaithful act since it is a breach of trust. But what if the partner is aware and agrees to participate jointly in monogamous sexual activity? I would submit there is no infidelity involved as there is no breach of trust. Although I would agree that Savage is stretching when he describes monogamous sex as a ââ¬Å"need.â⬠I would accept his view that it is a strong desire for many people. I concur with the notion that responsible nonmonogamy that is done safely with the knowledge and consent of the partner does not pose a threat to the institutions of marriage. and the family as claimed by mainstream culture. Swingers I base my argument on literature that shows that swingers have a lower divorce rate than the American population at large and also on my own personal observations of people in this significant subculture (Liberated Christians). Although swingers can include singles of both sexes, most are married or common law couples with children, ranging in age from 20s to 60s. They can be from all walks of life including the clergy. They tend to be middle and upper socioeconomic classes but, otherwise, are indistinguishable from the majority except for their open pursuit of non monogamous relationships. To me the chief characteristic separating swingers from non swingers is that the former draw a clear distinction between ââ¬Å"sexâ⬠and ââ¬Å"loveâ⬠. My experience is that while group sex does indeed take place it is not as prevalent as non swingers believe nor it is the ââ¬Å"be all and end allâ⬠of this lifestyle. While it is true that there is more emphasis on the physical erotic aspects of the sex act, this does not mean that friendship and affection are excluded. For example, while I can enjoy sex with a new partner, I do so even more with one I have gotten to know developed some feelings for. On the other hand, if I disliked my sexual partner I would not derive any pleasure having sex with her. Swingers have developed the theory of primary and secondary relationships to distinguish their relationships between their wife or long term partner and their ââ¬Å"temporaryâ⬠partners. If you are interested in a new partner but know that your

Macro2B Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Macro2B - Essay Example Workers who spend time looking for employment are engaged in job search. This type of unemployment is the case of frictional employment, which is due to the time workers spend in job search. This exists even when the number of people seeking jobs is equal to the number of jobs being offered, that is it does not mean that there is a surplus of labor. However, unemployment when there are more people seeking jobs in a labor market than there are jobs available at the current wage is called as structural unemployment. Both frictional and structural unemployment is inevitable in any economy. Thus, a certain amount of unemployment is normal, which is called as the natural rate of unemployment. The natural rate of unemployment is the unemployment rate that arises from the effects of frictional plus structural unemployment. Actual unemployment rate fluctuates around the natural rate of unemployment. The natural rate of unemployment is calculated as: 4. Perhaps tongue-in-cheek, some economists occasionally distinguish between ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠inflation and ââ¬Å"badâ⬠inflation. Speculate as to why these economists might see some inflations as superior to others. Inflation is the sign that an economy is growing or expanding. The lack of inflation is an indicator that the economy is weakening. A small inflation is just as bad as high inflation. Thus, it is not easy to label inflation as good or bad, and it depend on overall economy and individual personal thinking. When an economy grows or expands (boom) the price level of goods and services rises. This effectively increases the inflation. Since, economy is growing people have more money to purchase and therefore, the purchasing power of individual increases comparatively. This type of inflation is generally referred as ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠inflation. If an economy continue to grows, there comes to a point (peak), when the inflation is too high and government needs to do something to lower

Product Placement In Movies Media Essay
Product Placement In Movies Media Essay Many people who saw Home alone remember the scene in the beginning where the McAllister family sits around the table having dinner. Fuller, go easy on the Pepsi, Kevins aunt said to her son. But this phrase is much more than just a warning against drinking too much soda. These products are not appearing by accident. In a quest to cut the commercial clutter and declining television ratings, marketers have tried their hand at more subtle or intrusive ways of displaying their products in big-screen movies through what is known as product placement. Product placement, also called embedded marketing, is defined by the European Union as any form of audiovisual commercial communication consisting of the inclusion of or reference to a product, a service or the trade mark thereof so that is featured within a programmeà [1]à . It is a form of advertising that is used in movies and TV shows where branded products are placed in a movie setting. It usually aims to be inconspicuous and be part of the scene so that the audience will see a product in the natural environment. Product placement practices also exist in music videos, radio programs, video games, plays, novels etc. Placing branded products in entertainment media like movies is not a new developed concept. There is no doubt that the consumer is more likely to accept product placement in movies compared to traditional advertisements. Product placement can add credibility to a movie. It is easier to identify with a story or with a movie character when they used products familiar to everyday life. Product placement is a substitute for the traditional TV advertising. It has been used since the invention of the small screen. Product placement or brand placement appeared first in motion pictures as early as the late 1940s and early 1950s. One example was in 1948 in the movie Mildred Pierce where an actor drank Jack Daniels whinsky. Since Reeses Pieces appeared in the movie E.T. The Extraterrestrial, over 20 years ago, product placement has developed and evolved significantly. After the film realesed, Hersey claimed a 65% increase in sales of Reeses Pieces candy. This success generate an intensified interest in product placement area which has led to the establishement of agencies that specialize in product placement. Some of the company that provides product placement servicies are: Creative Film Production, Creative Artist, Krown Enterteinment, Norm Marshall Associates, Robert Kovologgs Associated Film Promotions, Unique Product Placement, Creative Entertainment Servicies.à [ 2]à This agencies examine film scripts, search for appropriate settings in movies where their clients products can be placed and then make suggestions to the film makers. The product placement in a movie can be as simple as a product being used in one scene (e.g. when a character uses a particular brand of beer or soft drink), a brand being mentioned by a character in the story, or a logo visible in the background of a frame (e.g. when a brands logo is visible on a billboard or the side of a truck). At the other extreme, a product placement can be an integral part of the movie. In the movie Youve got mail, AOL Internet service was an essential part of the movie and was connected to the plot throughout the entire movie. The multifaceted nature of product placement makes it an interesting, complex, marketing practice. In any James Bond movies, the agent has always been drinking martini, driving luxuries cars, wearing the fanciest suits and the most expensive watches. James Bond movies are famous for being the ones with the biggest amount of product placement. They include mostly upmarket range products. CinemaScore To determine how much a marketer should pay a movie producer for a product placement, Ed Mintz developed a sistem called CinemaScore which is similar to the Nielsen ratings in television advertising. CinemaScore is the industry lider in measuring movie appeal among theatre audiences. For over 34 years, CinemaScore has been polling moviegoers at major movie releases on opening night to collect demographic information and calculate a distinctive CinemaScore grade. A movies overall CinemaScore can range from A+ to F. For example, using the CinemaScore formula, they calculated a $28,130 placement fee for the placement of Coke in Crocodile Dundee II based on projected $100,000 million revenues at the box office and recall data obtain from exit surveys. Types of product placement strategies Product placement strategies can be categorized by the mode of presentation (the senses activated by the stimulus) into three modes: visual only (VIS), audio only (AUD) and combined audio-visual (AV). The first mode (VIS) involves showing a product, logo, billboard or some other visual brand identifier without any relevant message or sounds on the audio track which draw attention to the product (e.g. Danny DeVito drinking Coors Light with the label clearly exposed to the audience in Twins). The second mode involves the mention of a brand name or a character conveying brand-related messages in audio form, without showing the product on the screen (e.g. Martin Sheen yelling to a waitress Get this kid a Molson Light in Wall Street). The third mode (AV) involves showing a brand and at the same time mentioning the brand name or conveying a brand-relevant message in audio form (e.g. the main character in Waynes World saying the choice of a new generation before taking a sip from a can of Pepsi). Placements in any of the three modes may be subtle or prominent. Prominent placements are those in which the product (or other band identifier) is made highly visible by virtue of size and/or position on the screen or its centrality to the action in the scene. Subtle placements are those in which the brand is not shown prominently (e.g. small in size, a background pop outside of the main field of visual focus, lost in an array of multiple products or objects, low time of exposure). Mode and prominence are relevant to the ease with which a product can be incorporated into a movie, and therefore the cost to the marketer of reaching an audience in this way. Of the three modes, VIS is the most frequently used, but it runs the risk that viewers will not attend to or recall the products presence in the scene in the absence of audio reinforcement. AV overcome this problem, but it is the most expensive and difficult mode to accommodate. Similarly, subtle placement which can be incorporated into a scene as background and do not require a plausible basis for the overt integration of the product into the action are relatively less costly than prominent depictions. A worldwide trend in advertising, product placement, is a vehicle for everything from foodstuffs to electronics or automobiles. So, how does it work exactly? Its actually pretty simple. Basically, there are three ways product placement can occur: it simply happens it is arranged and a certain amount of the product serves as compensation it is arranged and there is financial compensation Sometimes product placement just happens. A set dresser, producer, director or even an actor might come across something he thinks will enhance the project. Usually, this has to do with boosting the level of credibility or realism of the story being told. One exemple can be found in the surprising use of a can of RAID- an ant killer made by the SC Johnson company- in an episode of the popular HBO series The Sopranos. According to an article in USA Today, Therese Van Ryne, a spokeswoman for the SC Johnson, said that the company was not approached about the use of their product. The most common type of deal is a simple exchange of the product for the placement. Let supposing that someone of the crew knows someone who works for Honest Tea. The movie people approach the Honest Tea folks with a proposal and the deal is made; in exchange of the airtime, the cast and crew are provided with an ample supply of Honest Tea drinks at work. Sometimes a gift of the product is not an appropriate form of compensation, so money powers the deal. Why do they use product placement? To achieve prominent audience exposure, visibility, attention and interest To increase brand awareness To increase consumer memory and recall of the brand/product To create instant recognition of the product/brand in the media vehicle and at the point of purchase To bring desired change in consumers attitudes or overall evaluation of the brand To bring a change in the audiences purchase behaviors Product placement can have a significant effect on message receptivity. The sponsor of product placements is likely to gain goodwill by associating itself with a popular program targeted to a specific audience. The more successful the program, the longer shelf life of the product placement. Nielsen Media Research has shown that product placement in television shows can raise brand awareness by 20%.à [3]à Product placements can have a significant effect on recall. For example, memory improves when visual/auditory modality and plot connection are congruent. Verbal and visual brand placements are better recall than placements having one or the other. To increase brand memory, brands should be prominently placed and be accompanied by an actor in films or television programs. Brand evaluations can become more positive when the placement is more editorial instead of commercial and when non-users of the brand are reached. Behavior and behavioral intentions are influenced best when the audience has positive evaluations of brand placement, when placements are presented in editorial formats, and when placements are repeated.à [4]à Conclusion Product placement is gaining more and more popularity and at the same time has turned into a huge, profitable business for both the broadcasting companies and the producers. In the past decade product placement has become a very sophisticated business. Today, every movie contains product placement. While in the James Bond-Movies 007 drinks Martini, Will Smith drives a Porsche 911 Turbo in Bad Boys. There could be mentioned thousands of examples like this I think product placement is an innovative way to advertise a product, Ray said. When you show the usefulness of your product by showing how it makes other peoples lives easier, youve created an advertisement that is invaluable. (Neuroscience major Andrew Ray) Douglas McKinley, an advertising professor at BYU, sees product placement as a necessary monetary help for a film industry. We have all come to accept product placement as a legitimate way to help fund the movie, McKinley said. (Product placement can be) good if the product is written into the script so that it looks like part of the landscape. The next time you watch a movie try to keep an eye out for products or brand-names you recognize. It is highly likely that you will see one of the major soft drink companies represented. Once you spotted something, see how many other scenes include that product. You will start to see a trend.
